Your First Mountain Bike Ride at Bluff Creek

If you've been riding paved trails and want to try mountain biking, Bluff Creek Trail at Lake Hefner is the perfect place to start. It's Oklahoma City's premier mountain biking trail system, with loops ranging from beginner-friendly to advanced, all within the city limits.

What Is Bluff Creek?

Bluff Creek is a network of singletrack trails on the north side of Lake Hefner. Built and maintained by local volunteers, the trail system features flowy berms, small jumps, and technical features through wooded creekside terrain. It's the primary off-road cycling destination in Oklahoma City.

Trail Difficulty Levels

Green loops (beginner): Flat, smooth singletrack with no technical features. Perfect for your first time on dirt.

Blue loops (intermediate): Adds berms, small rollers, and some rooty sections. Requires basic bike handling skills.

Black sections (advanced): Technical features, drops, and tight switchbacks. For experienced riders only.

What You Need to Get Started

  • A mountain bike — doesn't need to be fancy, but needs knobby tires and ideally front suspension
  • A helmet — non-negotiable on dirt
  • Gloves — for grip and protection
  • Water — no services on the trail
  • Basic repair kit — tube, pump, tire levers

Tips for Your First Ride

Start with the green loop. Don't jump straight to blue or black. Get comfortable on dirt first.

Look ahead, not at your front wheel. Your bike goes where your eyes go. Look where you want to go, not at obstacles.

Keep your speed up. Mountain biking is actually easier with some momentum. Going too slow makes features harder.

Relax your grip. A death grip on the bars makes the bike harder to control. Stay loose and let the bike move under you.

Where to Get Help

Trailhead Cycling in Edmond is the local mountain bike shop — they can set you up with the right gear and point you toward group rides. The Oklahoma City cycling community is welcoming to beginners, so don't be shy about asking for advice.
